GEORGE TOWN: Free parking to the value of RM5 will be given to the first 10,000 users of a new smart parking application that will come into operation tomorrow.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that tomorrow the Penang Smart Parking system would be operational at 647 parking bays here and 350 in Seberang Perai.
The system makes use of e-wallet technologies such as Boost, Touch ‘n’ Go and Grab Pay and the first 10,000 users would receive RM5 credit in their e-wallet.
’I expect the people will take at least one or two years to get used to the new technology,” Chow said.
Among the parking bays involved here are in Union Street, Beach Street, Lebuh Pasar, Penang Street, Queen Street, King Street, Downing Street, Bishop Street, Church Street and Church Street Ghaut, China Street and China Street Ghaut. In, Seberang Perai, the bays are at Lebuh Langsat and Jalan Icon City.
Chow said several roads on the island and Seberang Perai would be closed temporarily for the installations of sensors for the pioneer phase and the overall 36,000 car parking places which were expected to be fully completed by August 2020.
He said that the state government had also agreed to a parking rate of 80 sen an hour within the Penang City Council area and 40 sen an hour in Seberang Perai Municipal Council areas. The rate for monthly passes remains at RM150 a month (island) and RM75 a month (Seberang Perai).
